Laser hair therapy is a promising option for men and women suffering from hair loss. This viable alternative or addition to hair transplantation procedures is a non-invasive outpatient procedure that will help to decrease the amount of hair loss.
How does it work?
Laser hair therapy uses a low-level laser technology that has been clinically and scientifically proven to safely and effectively stimulating the hair follicles’ metabolism and protein synthesis. It also promotes hair regrowth by stimulating blood flow in the scalp and the follicle. Laser hair therapy can be combined with medication as part of an overall hair loss treatment plan, or it can be performed after a surgical hair restoration procedure to stimulate hair growth and speed-up the healing process.
The Revage 670
In our office, we offer the Revage 670 Laser for this purpose. This system contains 30 laser diodes that rotate 180 degrees around the scalp. This dynamic process increases the contact of the laser energy with the hair follicles, making it potentially more effective in stimulating hair growth than hand-held lasers. The Revage 670 Laser is a safe and comfortable laser system. Studies with this device have shown that the low-level laser produces an eighty-five percent success rate in slowing the progression of hair loss, and up to a thirty-nine percent increase in fullness.*
Treatments are administered twice per week for twelve weeks and then once a week for the next sixteen weeks. Once hair growth has been observed, periodic touch-ups may be needed to maintain the benefits of the treatment. Each treatment session takes approximately twenty minutes.*
Laser light therapy with the Revage system is particularly suitable for women, as laser treatments work best when there are diffuse regions of thinning in the scalp (the pattern most commonly seen in female pattern hair loss) rather than completely bald areas. Since the laser light serves to thicken fine, miniaturized hair, it is particularly suitable in these thinning areas. The Revage system is able to penetrate down to the hair follicles and deliver a uniform field of energy in these areas.
For those patients who are unable to travel to the clinic on the type of schedule required for the Revage laser therapy, we also offer the LaserCap LCPRO™ laser device that can be used at home on your own schedule. Both of these devices will be more effective than the laser combs that you may see advertised, and which are labor intensive for the patient. As with any medical procedure, you may have concerns about what the procedure involves. You can have all your questions answered about laser hair therapy when you schedule a personalized consultation.
If you have had transplant surgery, laser hair therapy can certainly help the newly transplanted hair to thrive and it can quicken the healing process. Low-level laser light is from the cool side of the spectrum, so the energy produced by the photons in the laser does not have the thermal component to cause heat injuries.
While results will vary from patient to patient, laser hair therapy typically results in hair regrowth within two to four months of treatment.* Call Dr. Prasad if you are experiencing hair loss and would like to find out if you are a candidate for treatment.
*Individual results may vary.
